ASMP New England members have a great opportunity to get a free review by two Boston photographic legends that have a combined 70 years experience in the photo industry. Ad firm veteran and fine art collector Jim Fitts brings the business approach and advice, and National Geographic photographer Cary Wolinsky critiques technique. Together they are the embodiment of the two skills each successful photographer must have: business saavy and photographic skill.
The review will be live with images projected up on the screen and print pieces on display nearby. There will be six reviews of ASMP members of 10 minutes each given on a first come first serve basis (please email event organizer Peter Gumaskas (peter@petergumaskas.com) for your spot. Logistics will be discussed with the six reviewees once they are self-selected. The reviews will be followed by a Q&A.
While a handful of members get a free and valuable review, the rest will be able to watch and learn whether they’re a review newbie or have participated in numerous reviews. You will learn about the mindset on the other side of the table, the dos and don’ts or portfolio reviews, and be inspired to begin preparing for ASMPNE’s upcoming annual portfolio review on November 13th (mark your calendars).

Presenter Bios
Cary Wolinsky
Cary Wolinsky started working as a news photographer for The Boston Globe in 1968 while completing a degree in photojournalism at Boston University. Soon after graduating, Wolinsky received assignments from national publications including Natural History, Smithsonian, Newsweek, and International Wildlife.
In 1972, Wolinsky began his 35-year career as a National Geographic photographer, producing picture essays in Europe, Africa, Russia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Peru, India, China, and Japan. His photographs have been published in books and magazines throughout the world. His photographic prints have been acquired by museums and private collectors in the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia.
Wolinsky co-founded of the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University and TRIIIBE, an artists collaborative.
Wolinsky now works with his son Yari, a filmmaker, and his wife Babs, a graphic designer, making documentary films. Their company, Trillium Studios Films produced Raise the Roof, a feature-length documentary, about the reconstruction of an 18th century Polish wooden synagogue. The film has been featured at more than 150 film festivals and is currently being broadcast on public television stations across the US.
Jim Fitts
Jim has been a fine arts and commercial art photography teacher, lecturer, curator, and photographer for over 35 years. He is an avid fine arts photography collector with a focus on 20th century American photographs. During his career in advertising and design, Jim has hired and worked with well over 100 commercial photographers.
Jim recently served as professor at Mount Ida College where he was instrumental in creating the commercial photography curriculum. Previously, Jim was a teacher at the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University. He has also held the position of Executive Director of the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University.
Eight years ago Jim launched photoweenie.com, a website that offers new work by emerging and established photographers. It is considered one of the premier fine arts photography websites.
Jim has curated several photography exhibitions for the PRC/MIT Gallery. He has served as a reviewer for the Photolucida portfolio reviews and the FotoFest portfolio reviews. He has also served as a portfolio reviewer for the New England Portfolio Reviews and the Savannah College of Art and Design reviews. He has curated the SSAC Photography Now exhibition as well as serving twice as a juror for their member exhibition. He co-curated Instant Connections, an exhibition of photographs by photographers who use Polaroid technology in the creation of their work and he curated Grunts: The GI Experience at the Panopticon Gallery in Boston. In the fall of 2013, he co-curated What I Did On My Summer. In 2017, he co-curated Boston Celebrity and panAFRICAproject (an exhibition of over 100 photographs by Boston photographer Lou Jones) at the Mount Ida College School of Design Gallery.
Jim Fitts has had an award-winning career in advertising, design and corporate identity. He held the position of Executive Creative Director at Avenue, Inc. in Chicago and Creative Director at HHCC in Boston and in Europe. Jim was Creative Director for Monster.com and a partner at ClarkeGowardFitts.
