When you think of Los Angeles coffee shops one thing comes to mind - writers.  LA is filled with ‘em. Some coffee shops have embraced the ever loitering laptop wordsmiths by offering free wifi with seating and outlets galore. Others? Not so much - which might be why a few on this list are a little stingy with their amenities, but damn do they make good coffee!

Espresso Profeta - (Westwood)  Profeta is situated in a pleasant little nook near the UCLA campus, but feels far and away from the bustle of Wilshire and Westwood.  The quirky staff is friendly and their espresso menu comprehensive. You have the option of sitting outside in the sun, neatly shaded by the trees in their courtyard, or inside amidst the work of local artists.  Warning: while there’s free wifi, there are no outlets, so this is not a camp-out coffee spot.

Free wifi: Yes

Seating: Indoor, outdoor

Snacks: Pastries & PBJs

Address: Westwood, 1129 Glendon Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90024

Website: None

Caffe Luxxe - (Brentwood) Caffe Luxxe has succulent, crispy, deliciously baked pastries to go with its creamy coffee. The espresso is top notch - enough so to stand the attitude that is served with it. Luxxe even has a little shop of hand creams, greeting cards, and coffee paraphernalia. The shop has a small, quiet indoor space as well as an outdoor porch (shared with Sweet Rose Creamery - a very creative & satisfying ice cream spot). There’s no wifi, but if you need to buckle down and write, go through paper work, or just take a break, this is the spot.

Free wifi: No wifi

Seating: Indoor, outdoor

Snacks: Pastries & Bakes Goods

Address: Brentwood Country Mart, 225 26th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90402

Kreation Kafe (Montana Ave, Santa Monica) - Kreation Kafe serves Caffe Luxxe coffee but is also a juice bar that serves health conscious meals. Wifi is free, but sockets can be harder to find. Their indoor/outdoor building is seamlessly blended by succulent walls that weave through the interior and exterior spaces. This can be a great place for meetings or catching up on emails. Need a boost? Take a juice shot at the bar before diving into that paperwork.

Free wifi: Yes

Seating: Indoor, outdoor tables

Snacks: Yes, full menu & juice bar

Address: Montana Ave, 1023 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90403

Tom’s Flagship Store (Venice) - Tom’s Flagship Store sells their famous shoes, but it’s not just a hip (and socially conscious) boutique. Tom’s also has a coffee bar with pastries and an outdoor deck with comfortable couches to enjoy them on and dog friendly grassy knoll where you can cozy up and get some work done.  Maybe even get a little retail therapy between emails…?

Free wifi: Yes

Seating: Outdoor deck

Snacks: Pastries & Juices

Address: Abbot Kinney, 1344 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice, CA 90291

Funnel Mill (Downtown Santa Monica) - Funnel Mill can fulfill every coffee (and tea) lovers desire.  They even have Kopi Luwak (look that up for a fun surprise!).  The purveyors  are friendly and knowledgeable and work-bot friendly. In order to access the wifi you have to purchase an item, but after that outlets and extension cords abound at the counter, tables, couches and rocking chairs (as well as a few outdoor chairs). There is a strict no cell phone use policy which eliminates annoying jabber, however it can be good for meetings and patrons tend to respect others by keeping their voices down. At the end of a long workday, order a tea and they will present it in a traditional ceremony - very special.

Free wifi: Must purchase an item for wifi code

Seating: Ample, counter, table, couch, rocking chair, outdoor.

Snacks: Gluten free goodies

Address: 930 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA 90401

Bourgeois Pig - (Hollywood) - Going for coffee at The Bourgeois Pig can feel a bit unsettling as you step off the sun drenched street and into a dark room lined with royal purple walls, velvet couches, & bronze trimmings. Once your eyes adjust, having an espresso at the bar with a colleague is quite pleasant, or you can opt to sit in the even darker, quiet, enchanted forest/cave-like room further in and really buckle down and get some work done. Just down the street from Upright Citizens Brigade, this spot has a history as a writers-haven - however their stringent new wifi policies are curbing that a bit. 1 free hour of wifi, plus a second free hour if you spend over $10. Good outlet availability.

Free wifi: For one hour, more with purchase

Seating: Indoor, outdoor, enchanted forest nooks

Snacks: Full menu

Address: 5931 Franklin Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90028

Intelligentsia (Silver Lake) - Like the rest of it’s locations in LA, Intelligentsia Silver Lake usually has a line out the door, which means it can be difficult to find seating. But the coffee is worth the wait and you have a choice of sitting indoors or outdoors and there is free wifi.
